AI Video Clipping Tool
It reads the whole video so you don't have to.
FreeClip is an AI video clipping tool built for speech-heavy video. It transcribes every word, scores the moments worth sharing, and renders them as vertical clips with captions — free, in your browser.
How it works
Inside the clipping engine
Four passes over your video, about a few minutes end to end.
- I
Transcribe
Speech-to-text with a timestamp for every word, in the language spoken in the video.
- II
Find highlights
A language model reads the full transcript and picks the moments that stand on their own and open with a strong line.
- III
Reframe & caption
Each highlight is cut on word boundaries, cropped to 9:16 around the speaker and captioned word by word.
Features
What the AI does for each clip
Highlight detection
Moments are chosen for meaning, not just volume or motion — a quiet, sharp insight can beat a loud one.
Face-tracked 9:16 crop
The speaker stays in frame when the original is wide, so clips look shot for vertical.
Word-by-word captions
Burned-in captions with the current word highlighted, timed to the transcript.
Titles, hooks and scores
Every clip ships with a suggested title, its opening hook and a 0–100 score estimating how well it should perform.
How to judge an AI video clipping tool
There are many AI video clippers now, and most of them do the same four things: transcribe, pick highlights, reframe, caption. The differences are in how well each step is done and what you pay for it. When you compare tools, these are the questions worth asking:
- Does it understand the content? Tools that read the transcript can find a great line even in a calm conversation. Tools that only look at audio peaks tend to pick laughter and shouting.
- Are the cuts clean? Clips that start mid-word or end before the punchline need manual fixing, which defeats the point.
- Does the reframe follow the speaker? A fixed center crop often cuts people out of wide shots.
- Are captions accurate and readable? Captions carry most short videos, since many people watch with the sound off.
- What does the free version include? Check for watermarks, export limits and whether you need an account.
FreeClip is built around the transcript-first approach: it is strongest on speech-heavy video and is free to try without an account.
Where an AI clipper saves the most time
- Content teams turning every webinar and customer interview into a batch of social clips.
- Agencies and social media managers who need a first cut fast and then polish the best two.
- Educators pulling one-minute lessons out of recorded lectures.
- Creators who publish long-form and want Shorts without hiring an editor.
Current limits, honestly
FreeClip is in beta. Videos are uploaded as files (MP4, MOV or WebM) — pasting a YouTube or Twitch link is not supported yet. Each video can be up to 60 minutes and 2 GB, you can clip 3 videos a day free (5 when signed in), and clips are deleted after 24 hours.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is an AI video clipping tool?
It is software that cuts a long video into short clips automatically. Instead of you choosing the cuts, AI analyzes the video — usually the transcript — to find the best moments, then exports them in a social-ready format.
How does FreeClip decide which moments to clip?
It transcribes the video with word-level timestamps, then a language model reads the transcript and picks passages that are self-contained, open with a strong line and usually run 20–60 seconds. Each clip comes with a 0–100 score estimating how well it should perform as a short.
Does the AI cut in the middle of sentences?
No. Clip boundaries are snapped to the word timestamps, so clips start and end cleanly on whole sentences.
How does the vertical reframe work?
The video is cropped to 9:16 and face detection keeps the speaker centered in the frame instead of using a fixed center crop.
What kinds of videos work best?
Videos with clear speech: podcasts, interviews, webinars, lectures, tutorials and streams with commentary. The AI relies on what is said, so silent or music-only footage is not a good fit.
Is the AI video clipping tool free?
Yes. During the beta you can clip 3 videos a day without an account, or 5 a day when signed in, each up to 60 minutes, with no watermark. Optional minute packs cover anything beyond that.
